Through research and conservation projects, campaigns, environmental education, and involvement in a range of important international committees, OceanCare undertakes concrete steps to improve the situation for wildlife in the world's oceans. In 2011, OceanCare was granted Special Consultative Status on marine issues with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

3 facts on plastic pollution

  1. It is estimated that every minute of every day, the equivalent of one truckload of plastic enters the sea.

  2. From all the plastic ever produced, only 9% has been recycled, 12% incinerated, and 79% will be accumulated in landfills or the natural environment.

  3. If the growth in plastic production continues at the current rate, by 2050, the plastic industry may account for 20% of the world's total oil consumption.

3 things you can do to help

  1. Avoid single-use plastic items whenever you can (stop buying bottled water, use reusable containers, bring your cotton shopping bag, avoid straws, etc.)

  2. Never leave any waste on the street, in nature or on the beach and pick-up litter – even if it is not from you.

  3. Embrace a zero waste lifestyle  (avoid fast-fashion, avoid food waste, reuse and recycle whenever you can)
